The need for affordable computers continues to increase.

Over 20,000 households in Utah have no computing device.

Following is a summary of needs and a plan to provide support.

Rural Utah

The four counties in Southeastern Utah, Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Jaun, have over 7000 households without computer devices.

From a man in rural Utah:

I am disabled and in desperate need of a laptop and would also like the Chromebook as well. I am trying to get a work-from-home job and most require a laptop.

This very small rural town does not have mail delivery. It’s a PO Box system. If the computer is shipped Fed Ex or UPS it might be able to be mailed to me.

Thank you again for this wonderful and life changing opportunity!!

Refugees

During 2023, the United States received about 60014 refugees. Utah received about 1060, or 1.77 %

In 2024, the United States is planning on 124,000 refugees.

Utah will also most likely double the intake and receive about 2212 refugees.

Homeless

The number of homeless (sheltered and unsheltered) in Utah is about 3600. Significant efforts are under way to help

The Utah Homeless Council has 5 goals. The first goal is to increase accessible and affordable house.

The second goal is to increase access to and availability of supportive services and case management.

CompUtah will focus on the second goal. For example, TechCharities has been helping to install an internet hotspot for the new micro homeless camp on 300 South and 600 West in Salt Lake City.

Laptops and Chromebooks will also be provided for the homeless at the micro camp to checkout and use for limited times each day. The devices will also be used to help support case management.
